Improving the profitability & sustainability of Esperance port zone grain growers

Pulse tour to Victoria

A Pulse Association of the South East (PASE) study tour to Horsham and Melbourne in early August, 2018 was focussed on better understanding the Australian domestic and international pulse markets in the Eastern States. A total of 14 PASE members and associates joined the tour that covered all facets of the industry, from plant breeding through to food production and understanding the changing consumer market.

The Wimmera region is the birthplace of pulses in Australia and in all four days were spent in Horsham looking at various pulse farms and their storage facilities; private and public pulse breeding programs; and several pulse packing, marketing and processing plants.

The group also had meetings with Pulse Australia Board Members; a chemical company on weed control options; and meeting with international grain marketers. This tour was part of the Royalties for Regions funded project, A change of PASE. The project ends in March 2019 and is focussed on supporting the growing interest to find a profitable legume break crop for the Esperance Port Zone.
