BOOK LAUNCH: Ryegrass Pastures hit the top shelf

MEDIA RELEASE - 16th September, 2008

Esperance livestock producers now have access to a new management tool that will assist them to better manage their ryegrass pastures.

A handbook to ryegrass pasture management on the Esperance sandplain was officially launched at the South East Premium Wheat Growers Association (SEPWA) Industry and Sponsors' event today.

SEPWA Pastures Research Officer, Kelly Guest said the publication aims to provide farmers with local information and local case studies which will assist with better overall management of ryegrass pastures and help improve soil stability and weed control for the following cropping phase.

"A lot of ryegrass management research has been focused around intensive stock operations, particularly in the dairy industry and this is the first time that ryegrass has been focused on in a broad way in the Esperance area.

SEPWA pasture trials demonstrated that ryegrass can be a valuable addition to our farming systems by providing both a high fodder option and assisting in soil improvement", said Ms Guest.

The book contains useful information on ryegrass establishment, cultivar selection, grazing and fertiliser management, fodder conservation as well as local case studies.

In addition, a section of the book looks at the results of a GrassGro analysis, (a bio-economical model) determining the most profitable, productive and sustainable way of utilizing ryegrass legume pastures.

The publication is a result of a three year project which received funding from South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc under the National Landcare Programme with support from SEPWA and Esperance Regional Forum.

The book will be provided free of charge and sent to all SEPWA members as well as being available at all sandplain spring field days throughout the Esperance region. For your copy or for further information, contact Kelly Guest on 9083 1141.
