The "Young Growers' Grain Industry Study Tour" was a joint study tour between the South East Premium Wheat Growers Association (SEPWA) and the Liebe Group, to South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

The itinerary was packed with a range of activities which include farm visits with various grower groups; a tour of the South Australian Research and Development Institute and Uncle Toby's factory as well as GM crop research trials.

SEPWA member Jake Graham and Birchip Cropping Group Executive member Andrew Weidemann discuss the difference between GM and conventional canola.

There were also visits to food processors and value adding companies such as flour mills, Bintara brewery, Haigh's Chocolate, Ardmona, a cheese factory and All Saints Winery.

The study tour also had a social side with participants able to catch an AFL game, ski or snowboard at Mt Buller and have meals with other grower groups, researchers and sponsors.

SEPWA members Todd Guest, Anthony Hesford and Lloyd Nolan discuss the incorporation of clay by the spayder into the bleached profile at Roger Grucock's Bordertown farm.

The tour was supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry under its "Australia's Farming Future Initiative" and also received funding from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) through the Industry Development Award.

The main purpose of the tour was to raise growers' awareness of the effect of grain quality on end-use products, to learn about quality assurance and marketing systems and to provide a forum for young grower interaction.

A full report and photos from the study tour will be made available on the SEPWA webpage at a later date.
